Among rhythm’n’blues insiders, “popcorn” is almost a genre term in its own right.
Located near Antwerp in Vrasene, the “Popcorn” was a dance club with four-digit capacity, which organized dance contests with growing popularity every Sunday since the end of the sixties.
The DJs not only used the rhythm’n’blues of the late 50s and 60s, but also soul, funk, British beat or atmospheric instrumentals. Always melodic, midtempo to slow, often in minor.
The “popcorn” phenomenon became an underground hype and soon made waves far beyond Belgium.
