We are confused, is it actually October? Because we have six brand new 45s, four of which are definite horror rockers, perfect for Halloween. I’m The Wolf Man, Satan is her Name, Casting My Spell, Switchblade (A Screaming Lord Sutch impersonation for you) and we’d argue Bloodshot Eyes, are a spooky season staple.
The last record in our selection, Champagne Mind With A Soda Water Income? Nope, no way to twist it into the theme. This is likely a symptom of the current strange state of the record pressing industry. So close the bright sunshine out with your heavy curtains, light your candles, pull your cape around your shoulders and slip silently into the dark side.
On a less fun note, we will have had to put our postage charges up soon. We did not match the last price increase but cannot continue to pay the difference. All our mail is sent UK 24 hour guaranteed with tracking and, in the UK, if you order six or more items, post is free.
For our fine music lovers in the rest of the world, we use postage with tracking. We use at least two stiffeners in each package and you’ll get some flyers (from us and friends depending on what is happening) and stickers.
We endeavour to ensure your orders arrive as cheaply but as securely as possible.
Round Robin – I’m The Wolfman / Sit And Dance – Domain
Storming Rock n Roll that has jumped from being a Halloween rocker to being an all year round floor-filler. Round Robin was a house name for Domain record label and this screaming demon voiced rocker is not the same singer as anything else issued under the same name. So great. Flip is a sax and organ instro, very groovy.
Steve King – Satan Is Her Name / Long Lonely Road – Mercury
Satan side is simply fantastic and still fairly under the radar (despite Stag-o-Lee and FTM’s best efforts). Sometimes we have to say just listen and appreciate this atmospheric slow strut. The flip is all the above and more, Road even has a girly chorus that is a plus. (Yeah, I never thought we’d write that either.) Looks like this may be the first reissue of Road.
Spellbinders – Casting My Spell / To Take A Heart – Miramar
Frat rocker club hit version, mixing a Bo beat with the Johnny Otis Original. A pretty unique mix of lazy vocals, laser tight lead guitar and fuzzy rhythm guitar make this a must-have.
Ron Thompson – Switchblade / Hot Night – Soma
“Rock n Roll is music for Juvenile Delinquents,” get the point? A switchblade tough pounding guitar instrumental and slow grind flip. I have a problem and can’t recognise instros by name, I have to listen to the opening, but even I can remember this outstanding stormer.
Wynonie Harris – Bloodshot Eyes / Good Morning Judge – King
You know how much we love this rock-n-roll-before-the-term-was-created genre? Here is a reissue that really hammers this home. Good Morning Judge was recorded and issued in 1950 and Bloodshot Eyes in 1951. When they were issued they would have been called Blues Jumpers and Wynonie Harris was one of the great Blues Shouters. This coupling of these great tracks though was reissued in 1955 just as Rock n Roll exploded across America and the World. So are these Blues Shouters, Jump, RnB or Rock n Roll? Or all of the above?
Effie Smith – Champagne Mind With A Soda Water Income / Water! Water! – Vita
Two sophisticated jump blues dancers from 1956. Both sides are my favourite. Effie’s playful delivery puts me in mind of the fabulous Louis Jordan. If this does not get you moving, you must be dead.
