Gaz Mayall, son of the blues hero John Mayall, is an integral part of the London club scene. Over 40 years ago, on July 3, 1980, he started his first club night, back then in the basement of Gossips at 69 Dean Street, right in the heart of Soho. After 14 years he moved to the basement of St. Moritz at 159 Wardour Street around the corner.
The St. Moritz is actually a Swiss restaurant, but time has stood still in the cellar and nothing has been changed there since what felt like the beginning of the 1970s.
For 40 years there has been a blues dance in London every Thursday evening, Gaz and his buddies play (strictly vinyl) and a band plays every evening. Gaz’s Rockin Blues has enjoyed widespread popularity for over four decades.
This double album now provides an insight into the music that is being played there. Namely 50s rhythm & blues, rock`n´roll from this time, with gospel the inspiration for the black post-war music and finally the ska sound from Jamaica in the early 60s. Everything neatly distributed on four sides of the record.
I hope you enjoy this album for many years to come. Treasure it as I and all at Gaz’s Rockin Blues have treasured these tracks.
40 years and still going strong!
